Magnets Could Be Coming to Pixel 10 and Various Android Devices

Tech companies frequently aim to create their devices lighter and slimmer with each new iteration, but the forthcoming Pixel 10 smartphones from Google seem to be an outlier. Information regarding the next generation of Pixel phones has been leaking significantly prior to their August unveiling, and Android Headlines indicates that the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold are anticipated to be somewhat heavier than their previous versions. With the exception of the Pro XL model, these devices may also be thicker. The alterations in thickness and weight are foreseen to be minimal — approximately 1 mm and 1 to 11 grams, accordingly.

Speculation points to the additional weight in the new Pixel smartphones being attributed to magnets. The Wireless Power Consortium has unveiled new standards for Qi2.2 wireless charging, which employ magnetic alignment to enhance efficiency. Apple’s MagSafe technology, introduced alongside the iPhone 12, already features a magnet ring around the wireless charger. The Android ecosystem appears poised to embrace a comparable strategy, and it’s surprising it hasn’t occurred earlier.

Consequently, there are rumors that the upcoming Pixel 10 smartphones will incorporate built-in magnets for wireless charging support. If this turns out to be correct, other smartphone brands may follow suit. The initial Qi2 wireless chargers were recently announced, with companies like Belkin and Ugreen gearing up to launch faster, more efficient charging products in the near future. The Qi2 standard also accommodates 25W wireless charging, facilitating quicker phone charging.

Speculation continues, and Google may instead introduce cases that include magnets. 9To5Google has reported on a rumored Pixelsnap series of charging accessories, akin to Apple’s MagSafe offerings.

Curiously, 2025 has been labeled the year of the ultra-thin phone, with Samsung’s latest Z Fold 7 being significantly slimmer than the Z Fold 6. If Google is choosing a different route, they likely possess a strong rationale. The new Pixel 10 devices will be officially unveiled at the Made by Google event on Aug. 20.

And who isn’t a fan of magnets?
