Instagram has recently and inadvertently prevented teen users from viewing search results for a range of LGBTQ+ terms, as stated by Meta, the parent company of the platform.
The problem was initially reported by *User Mag* and indicated that teens who searched for hashtags like #lesbian, #bisexual, #gay, #trans, #queer, #nonbinary, #Tgirlsarebeautiful, and #lesbianpride encountered a blank page accompanied by a message regarding Instagram’s sensitive content policy. This policy is designed to prevent content that might compromise the ability of the platform to maintain a secure community, including content considered “sexually explicit or suggestive.”
A representative from Meta confirmed to *Mashable* that the limitations were an oversight, commenting, “These search terms and hashtags were incorrectly restricted — a mistake that has now been corrected. It is vital for us that all communities feel safe and welcome on Meta apps, and we do not view LGBTQ+ terms as sensitive in accordance with our policies.” The company linked the error to its content moderation system, which mistakenly identified numerous LGBTQ+ terms as sensitive.
Instagram’s default configurations for teen accounts, especially for users aged 13 to 15, restrict exposure to sensitive content unless parents provide consent to modify these configurations. Nonetheless, this situation has raised renewed concerns regarding the platform’s treatment of LGBTQ+ content. Previously, *Mashable* covered allegations from adult LGBTQ creators claiming that Instagram had shadowbanned their content, although the platform has since attempted to resolve these matters with mixed responses from creators.
Meta emphasized that LGBTQ+ content is not deemed sensitive and can be recommended as long as it complies with the platform’s broader regulations.
Advocates for LGBTQ youth criticized Instagram for the brief restrictions. Leanna Garfield, social media safety program manager at GLAAD, stated to *User Mag*, “For many LGBTQ individuals, especially youth, platforms like Instagram are essential for self-exploration, community connection, and finding supportive resources. By restricting access to LGBTQ content, Instagram could be unintentionally reinforcing the isolation and marginalization of LGBTQ users.”
This incident underscores the need to ensure that moderation systems do not unintentionally negatively impact marginalized communities, particularly those who depend on social media for connection and support.
