**Meta Blocks Promotion of Whistleblower’s Memoir Through Emergency Ruling**
Meta has obtained an emergency ruling that prohibits former employee and whistleblower Sarah Wynn-Williams from advertising her memoir, *Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism*. In the meantime, are you familiar with the **Streisand effect**?
The **International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR)** delivered the emergency arbitration ruling on Wednesday, supporting Meta’s assertion that Wynn-Williams likely breached her contract. Meta claims she infringed upon a **non-disparagement agreement** she signed during her time with the company.
### Arbitration Ruling in Meta’s Favor
“The Emergency Arbitrator finds that, following the review of the briefs and listening to oral arguments, [Meta] has demonstrated a high chance of success on the merits of its contractual non-disparagement claim against Respondent Wynn-Williams, and that immediate and irreparable harm will occur without emergency relief,” the arbitrator declared in the ruling.
Consequently, Wynn-Williams is temporarily barred from promoting *Careless People* or distributing its audio and electronic editions. Moreover, she is forbidden from making any **critical or negative remarks** about Meta and is required to retract any such statements she has made prior.
However, this ruling does **not** ascertain the truthfulness of Wynn-Williams’ claims in the book—only that she likely breached her contract by disclosing them.
### A Damning Account of Meta’s Inner Workings
Wynn-Williams, who previously served as Meta’s **director of global public policy**, was employed by the company from 2011 to 2017. Her memoir offers a sharply critical perspective of the tech giant, accusing it of **sexual harassment** and asserting that Facebook overlooked internal alerts regarding its influence on **democracy and human rights**.
The **New York Times**, in its assessment of *Careless People*, characterized it as an “insider account of a company that she claims was led by status-driven and self-absorbed executives… even as Facebook became a conduit for disinformation efforts and allied with authoritarian governments.”
### Whistleblower Complaint Against Meta
In addition to her book, Wynn-Williams allegedly **submitted a whistleblower complaint** to the **Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)** in April. The complaint contends that Facebook (now Meta) **misled investors** about its endeavors to penetrate the Chinese market. Wynn-Williams states that in 2015, Facebook created a **censorship system** intended for use by the **Chinese government** in an effort to gain entry into the country.
### Meta’s Response and Wynn-Williams’ Termination
Meta **terminated Wynn-Williams in 2017**, a decision she claims was **retaliation** for her allegations of sexual harassment. However, Meta asserts she was let go due to **poor performance and toxic behavior**. While the company admits its previous interest in operating in China, it asserts that no formal arrangement was ever established with the Chinese authorities.
In reaction to the book’s publication, Meta released a statement labeling *Careless People* “a combination of outdated and previously reported assertions about the company and unfounded allegations regarding our executives.”
### The Book’s Release
In spite of the legal conflict, *Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism* was published this week by **Macmillan**.
