Close enough: Welcome back, Clippy.
Microsoft Copilot has rolled out enhancements to its AI assistant, upgrading its personality and visual design, and has assigned it a name. Meet Mico.
In a blog entry that revealed Mico and the autumn launch of Copilot, Microsoft articulated its aim to craft an AI companion that streamlines user experiences. The underlying principle is that “technology should work in service of people,” asserted Mustafa Suleyman, leader of Microsoft AI.
Suleyman stated:
“Copilot now links you to yourself, to others, and to the tools you use daily. It’s there for you, assists in keeping you organized, and even aids your wellbeing. It fosters connections through shared chats, enhances your learning with voice and visuals, and presents itself with warmth, character, and a distinct look: Mico.”
While this is admirable, it’s unavoidable that Mico will be likened to Clippy, the (cherished?) paperclip that assisted users with Microsoft applications in earlier times. As Timothy Beck Werth from Mashable pointed out regarding Mico during its trial phase, the “marshmallow, emoji-like face” brings forth “strong Clippy vibes.”
Microsoft’s blog indicated that Mico is designed to deliver a tailored experience, involving users in chat-based interactions. The updates to Copilot, featuring Mico, have launched in the U.S. and are anticipated to extend to other areas shortly.
