**Microsoft’s Notepad Receives a Generative AI Enhancement**
Microsoft’s enduring Notepad application is undergoing a noteworthy upgrade with the incorporation of generative AI features. On Wednesday, the tech behemoth unveiled a new functionality for Notepad dubbed “Rewrite,” enabling users to modify their text using an AI model. This tool empowers users to change the tone, rephrase text, and adjust the length of their writing.
Since its debut in 1983, Notepad has been a fundamental part of Windows, functioning as a basic text editor for quick notes and simple documents. Despite its historical significance, Notepad has maintained a minimalistic approach, getting little attention until now. In March, Microsoft finally introduced spellcheck and autocorrect to the application, prompting many to question the delay. Now, the integration of generative AI for editing and summarization serves as a timely and appropriate enhancement for this classic text editor.
### How to Utilize the Notepad Rewrite Tool
To take advantage of the new Rewrite feature in Notepad, simply highlight the text you wish to modify, right-click, and select “Rewrite.” A dialog will appear, presenting options to adjust the length, tone, or format of the text. After making your choices, click “Replace,” and the AI will generate three alternative versions of your text.
You also have the option to copy the newly generated text, refine the outputs further, or cancel your modifications. Previous iterations of your text are preserved, enabling easy reversion if necessary. If you prefer not to use the feature, the Rewrite function can be turned off in the app’s settings.

To utilize the Rewrite feature, users must be logged into their Microsoft account, as the functionality operates through the cloud.
In the same announcement, Microsoft also shared new generative AI capabilities for another classic application, Paint. With the latest Windows 11 update, Paint users can now employ “Generative Fill” to extend or edit images, and “Generative Erase” to eliminate specific objects from a picture.
### Availability
The Rewrite feature for Notepad is being launched in preview for Windows 11 users in the United States, France, the UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. Meanwhile, Generative Fill is initially accessible to Windows Insiders testing Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, and Generative Erase is available to all Windows 11 PCs.
