As the 2025 season of Major League Baseball commences, the organization is broadening its implementation of facial recognition technology—not only to facilitate swifter entry into stadiums but also to optimize food and drink transactions.
### Quicker Stadium Access with Facial Recognition
The MLB’s Go-Ahead Entry system, which is already active in nine stadiums, permits fans to gain entry without the need to scan a ticket or utilize their mobile devices. By submitting a selfie to the MLB Ballpark app, a fan’s image is transformed into a distinctive numerical code. At the entry point, a live scan confirms the identity, allowing entry if the fan holds a valid ticket. MLB guarantees that the original picture will be deleted post-registration.
An MLB representative stated that this system allows fans to enter 2.4 times more rapidly compared to conventional methods. The league is now broadening this technology to food stalls.
### Effortless Payments at Concessions
Commencing on Opening Day, the Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Guardians will pilot a new grab-and-go system for concessions. Fans can stroll in, grab their refreshments, and depart without stopping to pay. Transactions are automatically managed through a digital wallet embedded in the Ballpark app, with Mastercard facilitating the payments behind the scenes.
This system mirrors that of Amazon Go outlets, which utilize computer vision and sensors to monitor purchases. MLB’s iteration is still under assessment, and fans have the option to decline participation or erase their data at any moment.
### MLB’s Initiative for a More Contemporary Fan Experience
The expansion of facial recognition technology is a facet of MLB’s wider mission to elevate the fan experience. The league is also rolling out **My Daily Story**, a customized highlight feed powered by Google Cloud and Gemini AI. Set to launch on March 28, this feature will create tailored game summaries for fans.
Moreover, the Ballpark app has been enhanced with improved maps, dynamic content cards, and real-time updates according to a fan’s location and ticket status.
While these advancements are aimed at boosting ease of use, they also bring forth concerns regarding privacy and the increasing integration of AI and facial recognition in live sports events.
