Mon Mothma’s Dance in *Andor* Is the Meme We Never Knew We Required

When the galaxy is in disarray, your daughter is upset with you during her wedding, and you’ve just learned that an old companion is about to sacrifice their life for your cause, how do you manage?

If you’re Senator Mon Mothma (portrayed by Genevieve O’Reilly) in Andor Season 2, Episode 3, the solution is straightforward: you down a few drinks, hit the dance floor in a stunning gold dress styled with shoulder capes, and let loose to an electrifying EDM track as if you’re flying an X-wing into combat — S-foils locked in dance mode.

“We aimed to delve into her psyche in a way,” O’Reilly shared with Mashable. “We sought to illustrate the physical pandemonium — a release we have never witnessed from her before. She was able to shed the restrictions of her typical composure, which speaks volumes about her.”

The outcome? The first-ever electronic dance music sequence in Star Wars — and arguably its most unforgettable dance moment (apologies to the Ewoks). In a whirlwind of flashing lights and thumping rhythms, Mon Mothma and a crowd of dignitaries from her extremely traditional homeworld of Chandrila let loose in what can be described as a galactic rave.

Nonetheless, the scene is laden with dark irony. Mon’s ecstatic movements are tinged with emotional distress, making them all the more meme-worthy — and significant.

Executing the scene required significant preparation. O’Reilly mentioned that it took days of choreographic rehearsals and specially crafted Chandrilan formalwear that allowed for dancing. “A significant amount of effort went into that,” she stated.

What’s that EDM track?

Mon’s moment on the dance floor starts once the younger attendees begin dancing. A floating DJ droid drops what showrunner Tony Gilroy referred to as “a galactic anthem.” After three days of rigid wedding customs, the youth of Chandrila are primed to celebrate — and they get precisely what they desire: the Tarzana EDM remix of “Niamos!”

“Niamos!” was created by Nicholas Britell, the brilliant mind behind the iconic Succession theme. The track has been featured throughout Andor, beginning with the brothel scene on Morlana in Season 1, Episode 1. Now, it has been transformed into a full-fledged club hit.

Before this fresh remix, “Niamos!” had already been released in two other variations — the “Coruscant Lounge Mix” and the funkier “Galaxy Mix” — on the Andor Season 1 soundtrack. The song is named after the beachy vacation planet where Cassian was captured.

Whether Britell’s intergalactic banger will become a success in the real world is still up in the air. Gilroy made the audacious choice to also overlay the track during scenes of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona) grappling with sorrow and trauma — a striking contrast that intensifies the emotional effect.

Why this dance scene may represent Star Wars’ darkest moment

Mon Mothma isn’t merely dancing away from the pain of her daughter ignoring her counsel to sidestep an arranged marriage with a 15-year-old. She’s also reeling from the realization that Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård) has orchestrated the demise of her old friend Tay Kolma (Ben Miles), a banker who was involved in blackmail to assist the Rebellion.

“How considerate of you,” Luthen remarks coldly when Mon initially fails to grasp the implication. Her expression reflects the burden of guilt and uncertainty as she briefly steps out of her privileged cocoon — only to retreat back into it with a few stiff drinks and a spin on the dance floor.

She may be the galaxy’s most fashionable dancing mother, but while Mon tries to shake it off like Taylor Swift, Tay is still doomed — and far worse fates await those on lower rungs of the social ladder.

As the dance segment progresses, it’s intercut with one of the most distressing sequences in Star Wars history. Bix fights off an attempted sexual assault — the franchise’s first explicit reference to such an act — and is saved by Cassian. But not before their friend Brasso (Joplin Sibtain) perishes attempting to rescue her.

The galaxy may lack sufficient nightclubs to enable these characters to dance away their suffering. And the darkness is only growing as Andor continues its somber journey toward the Death Star and the Battle of Yavin.

It’s deadly on the dance floor — but Andor refuses to kill the vibe as it incinerates the Empire’s stronghold.

The first three episodes of Andor Season 2 premiered on April 22 on Disney+, with new episodes released every Tuesday.
