MoviePass Launches Fantasy Film Platform That Allows You to Build Your Own Studio

Fantasy leagues are available for almost every sport one can think of; however, for those who favor the flicker of a movie screen over the brightness of a stadium, choices have been scarce—until now.

MoviePass, the cinematic subscription platform famed for its tumultuous past, has just introduced Mogul, a new game it’s dubbing “the first fantasy league for Hollywood.” Tailored for film aficionados, Mogul allows participants to create their own virtual film studios by selecting actors, directors, and films within a designated budget. Much like fantasy sports, your success in this game hinges on actual performance—specifically, box office earnings.

Launched on the Sui cryptocurrency blockchain, Mogul rolled out its beta version on Thursday. The company teased the launch with a now-removed post on X (previously Twitter), yet the idea is already sparking interest.

Per the Mogul website, the game is free to engage in and does not necessitate any cryptocurrency for participation. However, players can buy a $5 “Battle Pass” to gain additional rewards. The game operates in six-week “seasons” synchronized with the movie release schedule, and players can adjust their studio lineups weekly.

To get started, users can register with an email address at mogul.moviepass.com. While the beta is active, new registrations will be gradually integrated over the next few weeks.

MoviePass itself has encountered a bumpy road. After soaring in popularity in 2017, the company endured a series of controversies, including data breaches and a Federal Trade Commission complaint claiming it made ticket redemption difficult for users. The service eventually ceased operations in 2019, only to relaunch in 2022.

With Mogul, MoviePass aims to reshape its story—and introduce a novel type of fantasy league for film enthusiasts worldwide.
