Musk Targets Tesla Roadster Showcase by Late 2025

Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has revealed that a showcase of the eagerly awaited new Roadster is anticipated in the upcoming months. In a recent podcast episode with Joe Rogan, Musk affirmed that Tesla is still progressing with the Roadster, which was first introduced in 2017. Musk remarked, “We’re nearing the demonstration of the prototype,” and vowed that the product demonstration will be “unforgettable.”

This announcement came on the heels of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s effort to cancel his 2018 Roadster reservation, which resulted in a reply email. Altman conveyed his enthusiasm for the vehicle but pointed out the extensive wait of 7.5 years. Musk and Altman co-founded OpenAI, but their relationship has since deteriorated.

The Roadster’s production was initially scheduled for 2020, with a launch in 2021, but it encountered setbacks, first pushed to 2022 and then to 2023. In February 2024, Musk revealed plans to deliver the Roadster in 2025, emphasizing its capability to go from zero to 60 mph in less than a second. He suggested it could be the most remarkable product demonstration ever.

During his time on The Joe Rogan Experience, Musk hinted at the Roadster’s features, joking that the demo would be unforgettable, regardless of the outcome. When Rogan requested additional information, Musk cited a quote from billionaire Peter Thiel regarding the future of flying vehicles but did not confirm whether the Roadster would have flying capabilities. He noted, “I can’t do the unveil before the unveil,” and implied it might be the most notable product launch ever, targeting a demonstration before the end of the year.

Musk stressed the importance of ensuring the technology functions properly, labeling it “crazy, crazy technology” and indicating that the Roadster might be more than merely a vehicle. He likened it to amalgamating all the James Bond cars, without offering further details. These remarks followed a report from Tesla indicating a 37 percent decline in quarterly profits.
