Comedian Nate Bargatz’s inaugural monologue as the host of the 2025 Emmys included a witty strategy to address the frequent problem of protracted speeches at award events. “To kick off the show, I’m going to contribute $100,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America,” Bargatz declared, highlighting that Emmy recipients have 45 seconds for their acceptance remarks. “If you stick to 45 seconds, it remains at $100,000. For every second you exceed 45 seconds, we will subtract $1000 from the Boys and Girls Club. I understand, I understand, it’s harsh […] It’s ruthless. What are you going to do, though? I can’t alter it; this is a contest I invented.”
Bargatz went on to clarify that for each second speeches go beyond 45 seconds, $1000 will be subtracted, but for each second below, $1000 will be added back. “Don’t get carried away though, because, like, I am footing the bill for this,” Bargatz remarked. “Some of you will go a bit over, some under. Make the right choice.”
