Netflix Unveils New Subtitle Feature Targeting Only Dialogue

Netflix is launching a fresh subtitle variant designed for viewers seeking a more streamlined, less overwhelming viewing experience. Announced on Thursday, the streaming behemoth will now provide original language subtitles that feature only spoken dialogue—excluding the supplementary audio descriptions typically incorporated in subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH/CC).

Until now, the sole option for original language subtitles was the SDH/CC variant. These subtitles not only capture dialogue but also incorporate sound effects, musical cues (such as [dramatic music swells]), and speaker identification. While vital for accessibility, these additional elements can occasionally divert attention for viewers who aim to follow the dialogue closely.

Acknowledging that a considerable portion of its audience—approximately 50% of Americans—frequently consumes content with subtitles, Netflix is rolling out this simplified option to better accommodate viewer choices. For instance, enthusiasts of films like Guy Ritchie’s Snatch, which features Brad Pitt’s notoriously difficult-to-understand accent, may welcome subtitles that concentrate exclusively on the spoken words.

This novel subtitle format will debut on new content, starting with Season 5 of the popular series You. Unfortunately, older titles won’t receive this enhancement right away.

In the future, Netflix intends to incorporate these non-CC subtitles into all new original content across every language supported by the platform. This will offer users the option to select between traditional SDH/CC subtitles and the new, dialogue-focused version—according to their individual needs and preferences.
