Netflix is intensifying its commitment to children’s programming with an important new feature, available at no cost to subscribers. On Monday, Netflix introduced its new independent kids app, Netflix Playground. Unlike a traditional video streaming application, it serves as an interactive gaming platform for children aged eight and under. Currently accessible to U.S. subscribers, the app is free of ads and does not include in-app purchases, providing a child-friendly environment. It also operates without the need for mobile data or WiFi. Users can download the app, log in to their Netflix account, and explore a selection of offline games featuring Peppa Pig, Sesame Street, Storybots, Dr. Seuss titles, and others. Netflix has recently secured the distribution rights for Sesame Street following the expiration of HBO’s agreement, launching the first new episode of its 56th season in November. Mashable’s Chase DiBenedetto reported on the transition to video games by creators of children’s content. While Netflix has rolled out games for adults on its primary platform, Netflix Playground signals a shift toward standalone gaming platforms for kids. The app is currently offered in the U.S. on both iOS and Android, with a worldwide launch planned for April 28.
