Netflix Reveals Disturbing New Docuseries on Fred and Rose West
The infamous British serial killers Fred and Rosemary West have been under immense media attention for years, with a multitude of true crime books and documentaries detailing their ghastly acts. Now, Netflix is joining the discussion with a new three-part docuseries named Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story.
Accompanied by an intriguing trailer, the series is helmed by Dan Dewsbury, recognized for his contributions to Louis Theroux’s Forbidden America, and produced by Blink Films — a production company experienced in examining the unsettling legacy of the Wests. This series marks the second installment in Netflix’s A British Horror Story collection, succeeding its controversial documentary regarding British sex offender Jimmy Savile.
Between 1967 and 1987, Fred and Rose West were responsible for a shocking array of crimes, as detailed by the BBC. The couple subjected at least 12 young women in Gloucestershire to torture, rape, and murder. Their victims included Ann McFall, Catherine “Rena” Costello, Charmaine West, Lynda Gough, Carole Ann Cooper, Lucy Partington, Therese Siegenthaler, Shirley Hubbard, Juanita Mott, Shirley Anne Robinson, Alison Chambers, and even their daughter, Heather West. Numerous atrocities took place in their residence at 25 Cromwell Street, infamously referred to as the “house of horrors.”
As stated by Netflix, the series will explore the Gloucestershire police investigation and showcase previously unseen police footage and unheard audio recordings. Additionally, it will feature interviews with the family members of victims — many of whom are sharing their stories publicly for the first time.
With the true crime genre continuing to evoke ethical discussions, it remains uncertain how Dewsbury and Netflix will address the delicate and thoroughly documented case of the Wests. The streaming service has encountered criticism in the past for its representation of real-life offenses, making this upcoming release one to follow closely.
Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story debuts on Netflix on May 14.
