CES consistently ranks among the most thrilling weeks in the tech industry. This year, we witnessed announcements of new smart eyewear, a $9,000 smart handbag, and an array of robots. On a more functional note, we received a significant upgrade from Lego with the launch of Lego Smart Play sets.
We didn’t require another excuse to be enamored with constructing Lego sets, yet the Danish company has delivered just that. The Lego Smart Play system brings an interactive dimension to a build with sounds, lights, and behaviors that enhance the fun. Additionally, all it takes to step into this new experience is one Smart Play brick.
Mashable Tech Editor Timothy Beck Werth was present at the Lego unveiling prior to the official CES launch in Las Vegas. Lego showcased features of the new smart bricks and Beck Werth noted, “With just a single smart brick, the CES demonstration brought Lego creations, characters, and playsets to life. Lego vehicles revved their engines, a Lego duck quacked and even snored when laid on its side, and a Lego airplane pilot exclaimed ‘woah!’ when flipped upside down.”
Fortuitously for us Star Wars enthusiasts, the new Smart Play sets make their debut with a Star Wars theme. The three builds are set to launch on the first two days of March and they are all available for preorder at Amazon. Here are the specifics.
Lego Star Wars Smart Play: Throne Room Duel and A-Wing
The largest of the Lego Star Wars Smart Play builds transports us back to a memorable scene from Return of the Jedi. The 962-piece Lego Star Wars Smart Play: Throne Room Duel and A-Wing recreates the famous lightsaber duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. However, unlike conventional Lego builds, this Smart Play set will emulate the sounds of an actual lightsaber battle. The set includes five Lego Smart Tags that enrich the interactive experience with additional sounds and lights.
Each Smart Brick offers approximately 45 minutes of battery life and the set includes the charger required for continued play. The Star Wars build is set to be released on March 1.
Lego Star Wars Smart Play: Luke’s Red Five X-Wing
Step into Luke’s universe with this 581-piece build that exemplifies the new Lego Smart Play features. A Smart Play block on Luke’s X-Wing enables it to produce realistic sounds and lights such as engine noises, illumination, and even repair sounds. Smart Luke Skywalker and Smart Princess Leia minifigures are available for even more interactive and engaging play.
The Lego Star Wars Smart Play: Luke’s Red Five X-Wing is priced at $89.99 and will be released on March 1.
Lego Star Wars Smart Play: Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter
The most budget-friendly of the new Lego Star Wars Smart Play sets is the build of Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter, which is priced at $69.99. This set features 473 pieces, including Darth Vader, his TIE Fighter, a fuel station, a Rebel Fleet Trooper, and more. Regarding the smart features and interactive enhancements, you’ll experience motion-activated engine sounds, lights, and laser-firing effects because it simply wouldn’t be Star Wars without those sound effects. Additionally, it includes refueling and repair sounds for the TIE.
Like the other Lego sets, this one is also set for release on March 1. This set is intended for Lego builders aged eight and older.
