Wes Anderson’s new venture — showcasing a star-studded cast and visual brilliance — is now ready to watch from home. An “absurdist thrill,” The Phoenician Scheme weaves a story of global intrigue, corruption, familial ties, and knife-wielding nuns. It features Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, and Michael Cera, along with cameos by Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, and Scarlett Johansson.

The latest film from the Oscar-winning director of Asteroid City and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar debuted in theaters at the end of May. If you didn’t catch it on the big screen, it’s now available for rent, purchase, or streaming. Here’s how to enjoy The Phoenician Scheme at home.

What is The Phoenician Scheme about?

Co-penned by Anderson and Roman Coppola, The Phoenician Scheme tracks Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro), a prosperous entrepreneur, as he reconnects with his novice daughter Liesl (Mia Threapleton) and brings her into the family enterprise. He reveals his intricate Phoenician Scheme after naming her his only heir (despite having nine sons), leading to numerous assassination attempts, quirky characters, nightclub burglaries, hand grenades, and basketball. It’s a spy film with a whimsical, pastel flair.

Is The Phoenician Scheme worth watching?

Wes Anderson’s latest flick grossed $37 million internationally, marking it his lowest-grossing film in almost twenty years. However, box office figures do not always indicate a film’s merit. The Phoenician Scheme has a 78 percent critic rating and a 70 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is decent but does not match Anderson’s most acclaimed films (Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, etc.). Nonetheless, if you are an Anderson admirer, it encompasses all the characteristics you cherish, rendering it a valuable watch.

While some critics at the Cannes Film Festival labeled The Phoenician Scheme as one of his least successful works, Mashable’s reviewer voiced a different opinion, calling it a “charmingly optimistic story about how even with our flaws we might discover love, family, and redemption.”
