Nintendo Announces Live-Action Legend of Zelda Film Scheduled for 2027 Launch

Nintendo is undoubtedly aiming to remain in the limelight this week.

On Thursday, the company astonished fans with a Nintendo Direct livestream brimming with game announcements and the introduction of its new mobile application, Nintendo Today!, which is intended to provide daily news updates. The app’s inaugural significant announcement is quite noteworthy: the live-action The Legend of Zelda film is officially slated to debut on March 26, 2027.

If you’re taken aback by the news of a live-action Zelda movie in development, you’re not the only one. Nintendo initially disclosed the project in late 2023, with Wes Ball—renowned for directing The Maze Runner trilogy—set to helm the film. Beyond that, specifics have been minimal. There’s still no update on casting, but at least we now have a release date to anticipate.

Considering the tremendous success of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a Zelda adaptation felt unavoidable. Yet, it prompts some intriguing questions. For instance, how will the film portray Link, the series’ legendary hero who notably doesn’t communicate in the games? Additionally, while the recent Echoes of Wisdom game showcases Zelda as the main character, it’s improbable the film will follow that narrative so closely after its launch.

Although Hollywood has delivered numerous grand fantasy epics, The Legend of Zelda possesses a distinctive tone and rhythm that may not easily adapt to the cinematic format. After all, it’s challenging to envision a tense climax focused on unraveling a puzzle with a boomerang.

As fans prepare for next week’s eagerly awaited Switch 2 Direct, there’s much to ponder. Who knows—perhaps Chris Pratt will turn up in this installment as well.
