Nintendo Switch 2 Patent Suggests Mouse Capabilities for Upcoming Joy-Cons

When Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 last month, several people—including us—quickly observed something peculiar about its new Joy-Con controllers. Now, recently discovered patent applications seem to validate the conjecture.

Public patents for the Switch 2 controllers disclose what many had suspected: they are capable of operating like computer mice. Although the patent documents are mostly in Japanese, which can be challenging for English speakers to understand, they feature multiple illustrations that clearly show an individual using the Joy-Con as a mouse.

The specific intention of this feature is still uncertain. It might prove especially advantageous for level creation in *Super Mario Maker* or home design in *Animal Crossing*, but these are merely a few options among Nintendo’s numerous first-party titles.

Nintendo is recognized for its hardware advancements, but it also has a history of launching distinctive features that eventually become underused after a limited number of titles.

Currently, apart from enhanced processing capabilities, this mouse-like function stands out as one of the most significant distinctions between the Switch 2 and its predecessor. More information is expected to surface during Nintendo’s official livestream presentation for the Switch 2 on April 2 at 9 a.m. ET.
