What is Connections?

The NYT‘s newest daily word game has rapidly become a hit on social media. The Times attributes the creation of this word game and its inclusion in the publication’s Games section to associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu. Players can engage with Connections on web browsers and mobile devices, tasked with grouping four words that have a shared characteristic.

Each puzzle consists of 16 words, with groupings divided into four categories. These could encompass anything from titles of books, software, country names, etc. Although various words might appear to fit, there is only one correct grouping.

If a player correctly identifies all four words in a grouping, those words are eliminated from the board. An incorrect guess counts as a mistake—players are permitted up to four mistakes before the game concludes.

Players also have the option to rearrange and shuffle the board for easier identification of connections. Moreover, each group is color-coded, with yellow representing the simplest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Similar to Wordle, sharing results with friends on social media is encouraged.
