Welcome to your guide to Pips, the newest entry in the New York Times game series.

Debuted in August 2025, Pips provides a novel perspective on dominoes, delivering a singular player experience that could become your go-to daily gaming activity.

At present, if you find yourself at an impasse, the game permits you to uncover the complete puzzle, compelling you to move to the next difficulty tier and restart. However, there’s no need to fret; we have your back! Below are step-by-step answers that will serve as clues to assist you in progressing through each level of difficulty.

How to play Pips

If you’ve experienced dominoes previously, you’ll grasp the fundamental mechanics of Pips. As highlighted in our earlier clues for Pips, the tiles, akin to dominoes, can be arranged vertically or horizontally and connect with one another. The key distinction between conventional dominoes and Pips lies in the color-coded rules you must fulfill. The adjacent tiles do not have to match precisely.

The requirements you need to satisfy are unique to the color-coded areas. For example, if a single digit is indicated, all sides of a tile within that area must sum up to that digit. It’s possible – and frequent – for only half of a tile to fall within a color-coded area.

Here are typical scenarios you’ll face across the difficulty tiers:

  • Number: All the pips in this area must total the indicated number.

  • Equal: Every domino half within this area must display the same count of pips.

  • Not Equal: Each domino half in this area must show a varying count of pips.

  • Less than: All domino halves in this area must sum to less than the specified number.

  • Greater than: All domino halves in this area must sum to more than the specified number.

If a section lacks color coding, it indicates that there are no restrictions on the portions of dominoes contained within those areas.
