Happy Saturday and welcome to your guide for Pips, the latest addition to the New York Times games collection.

Introduced in August 2025, Pips provides a novel twist on dominoes, offering an engaging single-player experience that could very well become part of your daily gaming habits.

At present, if you find yourself at a standstill, the game permits you to uncover the full puzzle, pushing you to move on to the next level of difficulty and start over. But don’t fret, we’ve got your back! Below are detailed answers that will serve as clues to assist you in navigating each level of difficulty.

How to play Pips

If you have prior experience with dominoes, you’ll grasp the fundamentals of how Pips operates. As noted in our earlier hint articles for Pips, the tiles, akin to traditional dominoes, are arranged either vertically or horizontally and connect with one another. The key distinction between classic dominoes and Pips lies in the color-coded conditions you need to fulfill. The adjacent tiles do not necessarily have to be identical.

The conditions you need to satisfy are specific to the color-coded slots. For instance, if a lone number is indicated, every side of a tile located in that slot must total the specified number. It is common – and often the case – for only part of a tile to fall within a color-coded section.

Here are typical examples you’ll face across the difficulty tiers:

  • Number: All the pips in this area must sum up to the number.

  • Equal: Each domino half in this region must display the same count of pips.

  • Not Equal: Each domino half in this area must feature a different count of pips.

  • Less than: Each domino half in this space must total less than the number.

  • Greater than: Each domino half in this area must total more than the number.

If an area is devoid of color coding, it indicates that there are no stipulations regarding the segments of dominoes within those slots.
