OpenAI Aims at MacBook Users Following Recent Acquisition

ChatGPT has become an integral component of the Apple ecosystem following a partnership between OpenAI and Apple that leverages ChatGPT models for Apple Intelligence functionalities.

Recently, OpenAI has enhanced its foothold within Apple’s sphere.

On Thursday, OpenAI announced its acquisition of Software Applications Incorporated, the developer of a Mac AI interface named Sky.

Sky is an AI-powered natural language interface that delivers AI functionalities directly on a user’s computer, operating like AI assistant web browsers, but directly on Mac instead of through a browser.

“We’re envisioning a future where ChatGPT not only addresses your prompts but also helps you achieve tasks,” expressed VP and Head of ChatGPT Nick Turley, who led the acquisition, in a blog announcement. “Sky’s smooth integration with Mac propels our ambition of embedding AI into daily tools.”

A demonstration video released in May showcases Sky’s functionalities on Mac, although it has not yet been publicly launched.

The Sky demo indicates the Mac AI assistant adding dinner arrangements from a text message to a calendar, locating nearby bars to visit beforehand, and responding to the text with a proposed pre-dinner plan.

“Our goal has always been to make computers more empowering, adaptable, and intuitive,” stated Software Applications Incorporated CEO and co-founder Ari Weinstein in a blog announcement. “With LLMs, we can finally unite everything. That’s why we created Sky, an AI experience that hovers over your desktop to assist in thinking and creation. We are thrilled to collaborate with OpenAI to realize this vision for millions.”

Sky operates similarly to other autonomous AI systems, necessitating various permissions, such as screen viewing and recording, to execute actions based on user requirements.
