OpenAI Board Member Larry Summers Steps Down Following Disclosure of Epstein Connections

As Congress deliberates the possible unveiling of the Epstein files, a recent batch of emails from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate, disclosed by the House Oversight Committee, has already brought to light alarming information.

These emails have triggered a prominent resignation at a leading technology firm.

Economist Larry Summers, who served as Treasury Secretary during the Clinton administration and was formerly the president of Harvard, has stepped down from OpenAI’s board, as confirmed by statements from both Summers and the company to Axios. Summers had previously indicated he would withdraw from all public engagements due to the release of the Epstein documents.

“In accordance with my announcement to withdraw from my public responsibilities, I have also opted to resign from the OpenAI board,” Summers informed Axios. “I appreciate the chance to have served, am enthusiastic about the company’s potential, and look forward to tracking their development.”

Despite his comments, he intends to keep teaching at Harvard, where he holds a position as a Professor of Economics, Axios noted.

“Larry has chosen to resign from the OpenAI Board of Directors, and we honor his decision,” stated OpenAI’s board. “We value his numerous contributions and the insights he provided to the Board.”

Summers’ connections to Epstein have been widely acknowledged. During Summers’ leadership at Harvard, Epstein contributed tens of millions of dollars to the institution. Epstein was even granted a personal office at the university during that period. Flight logs from the 2021 trial of Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell indicated that Summers had traveled on Epstein’s private jet, as reported by the Harvard Crimson.

Nonetheless, the newly disclosed email documents show that Summers’ relationship with Epstein persisted long after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from a minor. Emails from 2018 and 2019 reveal Summers sought Epstein’s counsel regarding pursuing a relationship outside his marriage with an individual he referred to as a “mentee.” Epstein dubbed himself Summers’ “wing man.” Summers also expressed several misogynistic remarks in these emails.

Summers’ last communication with Epstein in the email documents took place on July 5, 2019 — just one day before Epstein was apprehended and federally charged for sex trafficking minors.
