OpenAI Unveils 4 Fresh Personalities for ChatGPT to Reduce Sycophancy

Alongside the announcement of GPT-5 today, OpenAI has unveiled four new personality options for ChatGPT.

On Thursday, OpenAI introduced its newest foundational large-language model, GPT-5. This updated model merges a variety of ChatGPT features and reasoning frameworks into a cohesive system, enabling users to engage in in-depth research, develop custom applications, and complete tasks effectively.

According to a blog entry, OpenAI will provide users with four distinct personality options for the AI chatbot: Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd.

“We are also releasing a research preview of four new preset personalities for all ChatGPT users, enabled by advancements in steerability. These personalities, initially available for text chat and later for Voice, allow you to define how ChatGPT communicates—be it brief and formal, considerate and encouraging, or somewhat sarcastic—without needing to compose specific prompts.”

OpenAI mentions that these new personalities are optional and customizable, giving users the ability to adjust the chatbot’s character to their liking.

Crucially, OpenAI asserts that these new ChatGPT personalities will address the sycophancy problem that plagued prior releases from the AI firm.

Recent iterations of ChatGPT earned a reputation for being excessively agreeable, leading to issues, with some users indicating that ChatGPT exacerbated delusions and deteriorated mental health conditions, as highlighted by the New York Times. The high rates of hallucinations in certain ChatGPT models further contributed to a subpar user experience.

“All of these new personalities meet or surpass our benchmarks in internal evaluations for minimizing sycophancy,” the blog post claims.

“In summary, GPT‑5 is less excessively agreeable, incorporates fewer superfluous emojis, and is more nuanced and reflective in follow-ups compared to GPT‑4o,” the entry continues. “It should feel less like ‘interacting with AI’ and more like conversing with a knowledgeable friend possessing PhD-level intelligence.”

Currently, GPT-5 is not yet accessible, but it will be launched today.
