OpenAI Unveils AI Browser: A Guide to Experience ChatGPT Atlas

Today, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Atlas, an AI browser that includes ChatGPT integration. It is now accessible globally on macOS for free, as well as to Plus, Pro, and Go ChatGPT users.

In OpenAI’s announcement, the browser is positioned as a move towards developing a “genuine super-assistant.” There had been speculation about ChatGPT working on an AI browser, as noted by Mashable in July.

“With Atlas, ChatGPT can accompany you across the web, aiding you directly within the window, grasping your tasks, and executing them without needing to copy, paste, or navigate away from the page,” the blog post mentions.

OpenAI also released a video showcasing the features of ChatGPT Atlas on X and its website.

Atlas starts with a search bar for questions or URLs, and the “Ask ChatGPT” button brings up a sidebar on the current tab. Users can highlight text while composing emails or documents, and ChatGPT will offer editing suggestions.

ChatGPT memory is incorporated into Atlas, enabling users to ask about past searches or tasks. Browser memories remain private to the account, and users can select which sites ChatGPT can access. Users have the option to clear specific pages or the whole history and can use Atlas Incognito, which logs them out of ChatGPT.

The recently launched parental controls for ChatGPT are active in Atlas, featuring new options such as disabling browser memories and agent mode.

OpenAI asserts that agent mode, which navigates the web and executes tasks, has been enhanced in Atlas. The preview video illustrates ChatGPT Atlas helping with purchases on InstantCart. Agent mode is available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business users.

New safety protocols prohibit the ChatGPT agent from executing code in the browser, downloading files, or installing extensions. It is unable to access other applications or the file system and pauses to ensure user awareness on sensitive sites such as financial institutions. Users can use the agent while logged out to minimize access to sensitive information.

“ChatGPT’s agent functionalities still pose risks,” the blog post cautions.

Atlas is currently in beta for Business users and can be accessed by Enterprise and Edu users if permitted by the administrator. Versions for Windows, iOS, and Android will be available soon.
