OpenAI Unveils “Projects”: A Fresh Organizational Framework for ChatGPT

On the seventh day of OpenAI’s **”12 Days of OpenAI”** livestream series, the organization unveiled a new capability called **Projects in ChatGPT**, intended to assist users in tailoring and streamlining their conversations more efficiently.

Although it isn’t the most revolutionary announcement in the series, OpenAI feels this feature will greatly benefit the management and organization of assorted tasks by bringing together ChatGPT’s varied functionalities into one unified platform. This encompasses support for **Canvas**, a visual editing tool, and web connectivity through **ChatGPT Search**.

In contrast to significant technological advancements like **Sora** or the eagerly awaited (yet uncertain) **GPT-5**, today’s update prioritized improving the user experience. The objective? To establish ChatGPT as a comprehensive app for writing, research, programming, online searches, and even tackling multi-step tasks in the coming future. While it might not have been the most exciting revelation, it highlights OpenAI’s dedication to integrating ChatGPT into daily life.

During the livestream demonstration, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer **Kevin Weil**, along with colleagues **Drew Schuster** and **Thomas Dimson**, highlighted the potential of Projects. In one instance, Schuster illustrated how to utilize Projects for a **Secret Santa** event. He uploaded a roster of participants and their gift choices, instructed ChatGPT to randomly assign gift-givers, and then had it draft a message for the group. In another case, Schuster provided notes on home appliances and leveraged ChatGPT to figure out when to replace his fridge’s water filter—a useful tool for those who diligently monitor home maintenance (or you could just refer to your notes).

Dimson elevated the demonstration further by utilizing Projects to develop a personal website. Utilizing **ChatGPT Canvas**, he altered a website template, and ChatGPT accurately recognized the code and executed the requested modifications.

The **Projects** capability was introduced live during the event and is currently accessible to **ChatGPT Plus**, **Pro**, and **Teams** users. **Enterprise** and **Edu** users can look forward to gaining access at the start of the new year.
