Stepping into the role of Eddie Murphy is one thing; partnering with him elevates the experience entirely. Pete Davidson is fully aware of this, moving from a Saturday Night Live veteran to sharing the screen with Murphy in the fresh action-comedy The Pickup, directed by Tim Story of The Blackening fame.
The Pickup stars Murphy and Davidson as guards of an armored truck who find themselves coerced by a sly thief, portrayed by Keke Palmer, to partake in an intricate heist. The film seamlessly combines action and humor as these unlikely partners are forced out of their familiar environments, resulting in comical scenarios.
During a virtual chat with Mashable Editor-in-Chief Alesha Williams Boyd, Davidson and Palmer shared their enthusiasm about collaborating with Murphy.
“Collaborating with Murphy was a dream come to fruition,” Palmer remarked. “He’s been someone I’ve looked up to since my youth. My whole family adores his work. He’s a legend… Observing him was akin to attending a master class. Being very observant, I took in as much as I could.”
Davidson conveyed how his family was impressed by his work with Murphy, likening Murphy (“the GOAT”) to one of his uncles and adding, “I believe he really appreciates me.”
In a separate interview, Murphy recognized their bond, stating, “Pete and I share a lot in common… On paper, we’re quite different. He’s tall, at 6’3″, and I’m 5’10”. He’s Caucasian, and I’m African American. However, we are both stand-up comics who transitioned into acting. We’re both Saturday Night Live alums. We both experienced losing our fathers at around eight years old. So we have all that in common.”
Murphy indicated that Davidson’s character in The Pickup mirrors roles he would have taken on not too long ago, drawing a comparison to his iconic Beverly Hills Cop character, Axel Foley.
“I’m the rational voice in The Pickup,” Murphy clarified. “In the majority of action-comedies I’ve participated in, I would have been the young, reckless guy, like Pete’s character. But in this film — had it been 48 Hours, I’d portray Nick Nolte’s role. So now I need to be humorous from this viewpoint. And that was exciting.”
Davidson also found that perspective exciting, stating, “Everyone is enamored by and wishes to dive into Eddie’s realm. Very few achieve that, and I’m privileged to be among them.”
Regarding future projects, Murphy expressed, “I would love to collaborate with Pete again.” Could a sequel to The Pickup be in the making? Only time will reveal.
The Pickup premieres on Prime Video on Aug. 6.
