Pocket will soon cease to exist.
Mozilla, the developers of the Firefox web browser, revealed last week that it will be discontinuing Pocket, the read-later service it acquired in 2017.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.
Pocket was the leading read-later application with over 30 million users, as reported by Mozilla. The platform was initially established in 2007 as Read It Later, coinciding with the rise of social news and social bookmarking.
Read-later services allow users to save webpages, articles, and videos for convenient access. These services facilitated the ability to bookmark lengthy articles for later reading, store webpages for offline access, and much more.
Pocket offered a complimentary service alongside a paid premium subscription for under $50 annually.
Nonetheless, despite Pocket’s functionality and user count, Mozilla has opted to terminate the platform. As stated by Mozilla, “the way people utilize the web has changed,” leading the company to close Pocket in order to allocate more resources toward Firefox.
Pocket is set to shut down on July 8, 2025. Users will have the opportunity to export their data until October 8, 2025. Following that date, user data will be irreversibly deleted.
Alternatives to Pocket
While Pocket is bidding farewell, numerous bookmarking and read-later services are still thriving.
If you’re in search of a read-later platform similar to Pocket, Instapaper and Readwise are two well-known alternatives.
Instapaper was introduced shortly after Pocket in 2008, making it a long-standing option. This service provides a free tier as well as a paid premium subscription choice. Instapaper features a more minimalist interface compared to Pocket, which might require some adjustment, but it certainly appears stylish. Additionally, Instapaper is offering three complimentary months of its $5.99 per month Premium subscription plan to anyone who transfers their Pocket data to its platform. Readwise offers a more Pocket-like user interface, although it doesn’t provide a free plan beyond a 30-day trial. Afterwards, a paid subscription to their $9.99 per month plan or their $5.59 per month “Lite” option is needed.
Read-later Applications
That said, my personal recommendation for a Pocket replacement is an application called GoodLinks.
