Premier Theater Shows of 2025 and Ways to Enjoy Them

Introducing Mashable’s first-ever Best Theater Experiences of the Year compilation.

Though our entertainment team has typically centered on films and television, we have a strong theater-loving contingent among us. This year, given the outstanding performances we’ve seen on stage, it seemed fitting to broaden our Best of 2025 lists to feature our favorite theater selections.

However, there is a small disclaimer: we compiled this list after several critically acclaimed productions had already finished their runs, which we unfortunately missed. (Sorry to Purpose, the Tony Award winner, and the much-talked-about West End rendition of Evita!) Furthermore, some shows that have sparked excitement online, such as Sunset Blvd. with its outdoor performances and Tony accolades, or Waiting for Godot starring Bill & Ted’s Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, did not make our final selection.

So, what did make the cut? This list highlights productions that are recent, currently running, and concluded. We categorized our selections by Off Broadway and Broadway, indicating how you can experience them (if available). It features creative reimaginations of timeless productions, musicals inspired by films, astonishing new offerings, the Broadway hit that keeps drawing us back, and the Broadway flop we felt deserved a better fate.

So, check out which tickets you should purchase. And stay tuned for Mashable to dive deeper into theater in 2026.

Best of Off Broadway 2025

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Off Broadway, new revival

Discovering new vocabulary has never been more entertaining than in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Created by William Finn, Rachel Sheinkin, and Rebecca Feldman, this beloved musical immerses viewers in a middle school spelling bee — sometimes literally, as four audience members join the spellers onstage. This suspenseful competition provides an insight into the young contestants’ inner worlds as they tackle the pressures of adolescence and family dynamics.

Danny Mefford’s Off Broadway revival of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee delivers a continuous joy ride, filled with unyielding energy and a remarkable cast. Watching adults portray middle schoolers is immensely entertaining, but the actors’ dedication quickly makes you forget the age difference, replaced by a genuine investment in these kids’ victories. My whole audience gasped each time someone misspelled a word. Like us, you’ll get absorbed right away and leave with numerous catchy musical numbers ringing in your ears. G-O S-E-E I-T! — Belen Edwards, Entertainment Reporter

Starring: Philippe Arroyo, Autumn Best, Leana Rae Concepcion, Justin Cooley, Lilli Cooper, Jason Kravits, Matt Manuel, Kevin McHale, Jasmine Amy Rogers, Brandon L. Armstrong, Jahbril Cook, Emily N. Rudolph, and Cecilia Snow

How to watch: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is currently playing until Apr. 12, 2026.

Critic’s Pick: Beau the Musical

Off Broadway, new

An Off-Broadway musical that thrived, transitioning from one location to another while continuing to dazzle, Beau the Musical unfolds the LGBTQ+ coming-of-age narrative of Ace Baker (Matt Rodin), a pop-country musician who discovers his passion for music and self-identity through reconnecting with his estranged grandfather, Beau (Dead Outlaw‘s Jeb Brown).

Presented in a theater/dive bar setting, Beau the Musical creates an atmosphere akin to stepping into a concert enhanced by flashbacks. Eight actor-musicians portray both Baker’s band and various characters, including his tough-as-nails mother, his best friend, and the cruel bully whom he has complicated feelings for. The songs in this production range from lively to poignant and back again. It’s a heartfelt and joyous tribute to love, family, and music. Best enjoyed with a beer (or hard cider) in hand, you’ll feel as though you’re sharing a porch with Beau and Ace, savoring the evening breeze and the strumming of a guitar. — Kristy Puchko, Entertainment Editor
