Gems, Google’s customizable AI experts for specific tasks, are now being rolled out in Workspace. Featured in the Gemini app, Gems will also appear in a side panel across Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, Slides, and Gmail, representing the latest in a line of major AI enhancements in Workspace.
The side panel will showcase both pre-built Gems and the option for users to create their own personalized AI assistant. If you’re uncertain about the necessity of one, Google shares examples in its blog post: You might wish to “utilize an ‘assistant Gem’ designed for your job to help generate more pertinent summaries and content for internal communications,” or you could “develop a Gem that aids in sales conversations based on details for a particular company, prospect, or industry.”
How to access Gems
Gems are available in Workspace by clicking the “Ask Gemini” spark button located in the upper right corner of a document. This action will open a panel that includes both pre-loaded Gems and the option to “Create a Gem” (Google has a distinct help document detailing this process).
It is vital to understand that Gems may not be visible right away, as the rollout started on Wednesday, with Google indicating it might take “possibly longer than 15 days for feature visibility.”
Recently, Google has been enhancing Gemini in various ways, with the AI automatically generating email summaries in Gmail, integrating with your car, watch, and TV, and being added to Chrome. However, Google AI has also encountered some difficulties with certain basic inquiries, so approach with care.
