I have dedicated over twenty years to the entertainment sector, and throughout this period, I’ve observed how technological advancements—be it in gear, software, or AI—have persistently transformed the creative environment. My path has taken me behind the camera, into editing rooms, and within writers’ groups, providing me a firsthand view of the industry’s ongoing progress, largely fueled by technological progress.
During my film studies at NYU, I quickly became aware of the profound integration of technology within the creative journey. I began by editing 16mm film on a Steenbeck and eventually transitioned to tape-to-tape editing utilizing VCRs (yes, I’m dating myself here). Fast forward to today, and I find myself editing television shows using robust software like AVID and Adobe Premiere on high-performance computers.
Throughout this journey, I’ve witnessed how technology consistently alters our creative approach. It has made production quicker, smarter, and more accessible. I have always welcomed the newest tools and workflows—not solely because they are thrilling but because they expand our possibilities and assist us in unlocking our complete creative potential. While technology cannot replace the human aspect, it certainly enhances our communication and the expression of our ideas.
From AI-driven features that simplify post-production to mobile applications enabling remote control of lighting setups, these innovations are transforming the storytelling approach. They empower us to realize our visions more efficiently and with heightened creativity.
So why not delve into these new tools ourselves? Even if they don’t align perfectly, at least we’ll have developed our opinions through direct experience instead of relying on secondhand information. Embracing new technology is an essential part of refining your skills as a creative. The more proficient you become with both your tools and your storytelling, the more captivating your work will be—and the greater impact it can have on the world.
