Reasons You Could Be Unexpectedly Following Second Lady Usha Vance on Instagram

If you were among the 1.2 million individuals following Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff on Instagram, you might have observed an unexpected change — you’re now following Second Lady Usha Vance instead. However, there’s no need for concern; this isn’t a technical issue or a political maneuver. It simply reflects Instagram’s approach to managing official government transitions.

As of Wednesday, Meta has combined the two Instagram accounts. Thus, if you had previously followed Kamala Harris’s husband at @secondgentleman46archive, your following has now automatically shifted to JD Vance’s spouse at @SLOTUS. Emhoff’s account has been archived by the government and currently showcases only six posts — all from Usha Vance.

“Following the White House’s establishment of an account for the Second Lady, we are transitioning the Second Gentleman account to @SLOTUS,” a Meta representative informed TechCrunch. “This aligns with our procedure for presidential transitions and reflects what we executed for the President, Vice President, First Lady, and White House accounts earlier this year.”

This isn’t the first instance where Meta’s account transition process has led to misunderstandings. When a new administration comes into power, official White House social media accounts are transferred to the incoming team. Earlier this year, this meant that users who followed President Joe Biden’s official account were automatically switched to follow President Donald Trump. The same situation occurred with Vice President JD Vance and First Lady Melania Trump. Now, the transition has also impacted the Second Lady’s account.
