Microsoft users will soon be required to replace their passwords with passkeys as part of a strategic move to phase out passwords completely, with the deadline rapidly approaching.
As stated on Microsoft’s website, starting June, users can no longer incorporate passwords into Microsoft Authenticator. In July, autofill, a fundamental feature of password managers, will no longer be operational. By August 1, any stored passwords will be inaccessible, necessitating the setup of a passkey.
A passkey is a more secure method for logging in that merges a password with two-factor authentication in a single step. It involves generating a credential that is not kept on a server, such as biometric information or a PIN, unlike conventional passwords. Microsoft asserts that passkeys are more resilient against hacking and phishing attempts.
“It’s akin to utilizing a physical key instead of a word-based code,” stated Mashable Tech Editor Timothy Werth. “Passkeys reside on your devices, not on a Microsoft server, which minimizes user mistakes and makes password managers a less attractive target for hackers.”
As highlighted in our overview of the major cybersecurity breaches of 2025, password managers are increasingly vulnerable.
If you wish to persist in using Microsoft-stored passwords, you will need to utilize Microsoft Edge and activate password autofill or export your passwords. However, Microsoft intends to eradicate passwords across its platforms, including Copilot and Xbox, with new accounts being password-free by default.
Configuring a Passkey with Microsoft
Microsoft will prompt users to configure a passkey in Authenticator. If you utilize Microsoft Authenticator for passwords, you can expect to be prompted to create a Microsoft passkey shortly. Microsoft will automatically identify the best method for your passkey.
To incorporate new passkeys in the Authenticator app, click “set up a passkey,” log in, and follow the setup instructions.
To configure a passkey for your Microsoft account, log in and navigate to the “Advanced Security Options” tab. Select between “Face, Fingerprint, PIN, or Security Key” and adhere to the provided instructions.
