Report: Google Search AI Feature Moves into Internal Testing

Google is said to be internally evaluating a new “AI Mode” for Search, hinting that a public rollout might be imminent.

Per **9to5Google**, which acquired an internal email from the company, Google staff have been invited to experiment with AI Mode. A screenshot released by the publication illustrates the feature as an upgraded iteration of **AI Overviews**, merged with the **Gemini** chatbot interface. The tool seems tailored for tackling broader inquiries.

### Google Enhances AI Integration

Google is advancing its efforts to incorporate **Gemini** and AI-driven functionalities throughout its ecosystem. The AI model is now integrated into **TVs**, **Android devices**, **Google Search**, **Google Workspace applications**, and even serves as a **standalone app**. Furthermore, Google recently revealed enhanced access to its **Gemini 2.0 Thinking** model and launched **Gemini 2.0 Pro**, optimized for sophisticated coding tasks.

### Functionality of AI Mode

According to the leaked screenshot, AI Mode would operate as a distinct tab in addition to the existing filters such as **News, Images, and Shopping**. The initial preview demonstrates a comprehensive reply to a query regarding the amount of spaghetti required to feed a crowd, showcasing its capability to logically calculate based on portion sizes for both adults and children.

Significantly, AI Mode **occupies the entire search results page**. While it remains uncertain if traditional search links will appear beneath it, the screenshot displays a module on the right side featuring links to three sources, likely where the AI sourced its data.

### Implications for Publishers

The rollout of **AI Overviews** had previously raised alarms among publishers, who feared that AI-generated summaries would diminish traffic to their sites. AI Mode, which takes up even more real estate on the search results page, may heighten these apprehensions.

Nonetheless, AI Mode seems intended for **more exploratory inquiries** that necessitate detailed answers rather than quick responses. Examples provided to Google employees testing the feature include:

– “Contrast wool, down, and synthetic jackets regarding insulation, water resistance, and durability.”
– “What essentials do I need to begin aquascaping?”

As Google continues to refine AI-enhanced search experiences, it will be interesting to see how AI Mode influences both users and content creators.
