Report Indicates Apple AirTag 2 Could Debut Alongside iPhone 17

Apple’s AirTag tracking gadget has not seen any modifications for four years, despite numerous speculations regarding an upgrade. This situation might change in the autumn, as Apple is said to be ready to unveil a new AirTag, potentially dubbed “AirTag 2” or merely “AirTag,” in September 2025, coinciding with the iPhone 17 launch.

According to 9to5Mac, “trustworthy sources” reveal that Apple is gearing up to introduce the new AirTag this fall. These sources also imply that Apple could make an earlier announcement about the device, although this is viewed as improbable.

The report states that the second-generation AirTag will be compatible with Apple’s iOS 18.6, the forthcoming stable iOS version that is currently in beta testing. This should not be mistaken for iOS 26, the next significant iOS iteration available as a developer beta, which is anticipated to launch this fall.

The upcoming AirTag is expected to provide enhanced connectivity and range, with Precision Tracking increasing from 15 to 60 meters. It is anticipated to offer improved resistance to tampering, making it more challenging to disable its speaker and use it for surveillance without the individual’s consent. Furthermore, the new AirTag is expected to feature superior battery management, including notifications for low and critically low battery status.

Apple’s fall event appears to be promising, with the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and the new iPhone 17 Air reportedly set to debut, along with other fresh gadgets, including the Apple Watch Series 11 and an updated Watch Ultra.
