Report Indicates New AirPods Max Won’t Be Launched in the Near Future

Apple enthusiasts anticipating a notable enhancement to the AirPods Max might find themselves let down. As reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple currently lacks any plans to unveil a new, improved iteration of its premium over-ear headphones.

In September 2024, Apple debuted a refreshed version of the AirPods Max, but the modifications were minimal. The only significant change was the transition from a Lightning port to USB-C, while the remainder of the hardware stayed the same as the original model.

If you were counting on a more substantial advancement, Gurman’s latest “Power On” newsletter indicates that you might not want to get your hopes too high. He asserts that Apple has no intentions of making any “meaningful” enhancements to the AirPods Max in the near future.

This could be attributed to one of two possibilities. On one hand, the existing model might be performing well enough that Apple feels no need for adjustments. Conversely, Gurman speculates that poor sales could be why Apple is not prioritizing an upgrade.

This is a disappointing scenario for fans of Apple’s high-end headphones, particularly since the AirPods Max do not support some essential features of Apple Music, such as Adaptive Audio and Lossless audio quality. The lack of Lossless support is especially baffling, considering Apple Music rolled out lossless-quality audio in 2021—only a year following the launch of the AirPods Max. Despite their $549 price point, the headphones still depend on the older H1 chip, whereas Apple’s newer H2 chip fuels the latest AirPods Pro and 4th generation AirPods.

In other Apple-related news, Gurman has also provided an update on Siri. The company is reportedly planning a significant revamp of its voice assistant, with the goal of making it more conversational. However, this reimagined Siri is not anticipated to make its debut until 2026.

For the time being, it appears that AirPods Max users will have to settle for the current version, as Apple redirects its efforts towards other initiatives. Whether this indicates robust sales or a lack of interest in the product is uncertain, but one thing is clear: a substantial upgrade to the AirPods Max is not forthcoming.
