Dyson is raising expectations (and prices) with its newest Airwrap offering.
Called the Dyson Airwrap Co-anda 2x, this updated multi-styler comes equipped with a new motor and two RFID-enabled attachments that automatically modify speed and heat settings, akin to the Supersonic Nural. This cutting-edge technology is available for $699.99, marking a $100 increase from prior models, which includes last year’s Airwrap i.d. It will launch on Tuesday, July 8, in jasper plum and ceramic pink.
As a Dyson beauty beat reporter for Mashable, I’ve been evaluating and monitoring Dyson’s Airwrap collection and its numerous inspired replicas for three years. While I haven’t tried the Co-anda 2x yet, I’m here to outline the enhancements in this latest multi-styler.
An updated motor
Dyson claims that this Airwrap can provide double the air pressure and 30% more power than earlier models, thanks to its Hyperdymium 2 motor. This should ideally lead to quicker drying and styling.
Though the increased airflow may introduce a learning curve for styling, leaning more on air rather than heat could enhance hair health. However, some users, myself included, have found it tricky to maintain curls with previous models, where heat aids in style retention, meaning it may not resolve all issues.
For those worried about heat damage, Dyson retains smart sensors from earlier models to track air temperature, preventing harm.
The new Airwrap attachments
The Co-anda 2x presents two variants: one for straight and wavy hair, and another for curly and coily hair. Each multi-styler comes with six attachments, with innovative designs noted:
Straight/Wavy Airwrap Co-anda 2x attachments:
– 30-millimeter Co-anda 2x curling barrel
– 40-millimeter Co-anda 2x curling barrel
– Round volumizing brush 2x
– Fast dryer 2x
– Anti-snag loop brush 2x
– AirSmooth 2x attachment
Curly/Coily Airwrap Co-anda 2x attachments:
– Wave+Curl diffuser 2x
– 40-millimeter Co-anda 2x curling barrel
– Round volumizing brush 2x
– Fast dryer 2x
– Anti-snag loop brush 2x
– Tension comb 2x
The straight/wavy model incorporates both innovative attachments: the anti-snag loop brush and AirSmooth 2x brush. Dyson asserts the AirSmooth attachment “smooths and straightens with high-velocity airflow and auto-release arms,” likely more suitable for straighter hair.
The curly/coily model substitutes the 30-millimeter Co-anda curling barrel and AirSmooth with a Tension comb and Wave+Curl diffuser.
The anti-snag loop brush, featured on both variants, enhances previous smoothing brushes with curved bristles for improved control and reduced tugging.
The multi-styler is compatible with the i.d. curl function available on the MyDyson app, which provides styling suggestions based on a hair profile questionnaire.
An elevated price point
The inaugural Airwrap launched in 2018 at $500. The subsequent generation was priced at $600, with the Airwrap i.d. also introduced at $600. The Co-anda 2x aligns with this pricing trajectory.
It represents a considerable investment, priced at $50 more than Dyson’s V12 vacuum, double that of the Shark FlexStyle, and more than twice the T3 Aire 360. In terms of specifications and cost, it is a premium device.
For a more affordable option within the Dyson range, the 2022-released Airwrap frequently goes on sale for $100 off, bringing it down to $499.99, which is $200 less than the Co-anda 2x. Although it’s not currently discounted, Amazon’s Prime Day is next week, and any deals will be highlighted in Mashable’s deal coverage.
