Rule34dle: A Game Merging Wordle with Suggestive Animated Artwork

For those who know the internet well, Rule 34 is widely recognized: If something exists, there is pornography related to it.

This may appear vulgar, especially with current laws on age-verification requiring personal information to access NSFW sites (and sometimes even SFW sites), but Rule 34 was initially mentioned by a British youth in 2003, as reported in a 2016 Washington Post article. The early 2000s represented a radically different time online, prior to Instagram, TikTok, and age verification measures. Nonetheless, adult content has always been available on the web.

Even though the internet has transformed dramatically in the 20 years since “Rule 34” was coined, it still holds significance — especially when looking at Rule34dle, a combination of the infamous rule and the beloved word game, Wordle.

<pSimilar to Wordle, Rule34dle is a game but with a distinctive twist. On the platform, you are shown two fictional franchise characters (like Pokémon) and told the number of pornographic posts for the character on the left. The number for the character on the right is kept secret. You need to determine which character has a greater amount of explicit artwork online.

If your guess is right, you’ll be matched with the character that has the higher total and a new character, thus continuing your streak.

The game features several options, including franchise characters, omitting AI results, and a “hard mode,” where you select from three characters with all explicit post counts hidden.

Rule34dle, created by Reddit user u/DandelionGaming based on an idea by u/PensAndEndorsement on Reddit, also offers a daily challenge. Each day, you can engage in 10 comparison rounds with varying characters. You must guess without any clues, as the explicit art post counts for both characters are concealed. The daily challenge is uniform for everyone, and even if you make an error, you can still complete all 10 rounds.

For fans of fan fiction, there’s also an alpha version of AO3dle, where you deduce which of two characters has more erotic works on the fan fiction platform Archive of Our Own (AO3). AO3dle provides both a unique pairing and a daily challenge, much like Rule34dle.

As Kotaku highlighted, streamers are enjoying Rule34dle with friends, resulting in amusing outcomes, on TikTok.
