The sci-fi young adult series Animorphs, celebrated for its unique and striking book covers, is set to debut on Disney+. As reported by Variety, a new Animorphs television series is in the works for the streaming service. Bayan Wolcott, recognized for works like The Testaments and The Summer I Turned Pretty, will pen and executive produce the series. Academy Award winner Ryan Coogler, alongside Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler, will take on the role of executive producers through Proximity Media.
Inspired by the series authored by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant, Animorphs centers around young individuals who stumble upon extraterrestrial technology enabling them to morph into animals. This ability draws them into an intergalactic conflict between the Andalites and the parasitic Yeerks. As the Yeerks covertly invade Earth, Jake, Rachel, Tobias, Cassie, Marco, and their Andalite companion Ax must battle to protect the planet.
The main Animorphs series comprises 54 novels, with eight supplementary companion books broadening the universe. A prior Animorphs television adaptation aired on Nickelodeon for 26 episodes from 1998 to 2000.
With just 26 episodes, the original series was unable to encompass the vast narrative of 62 books, leaving a wealth of Animorphs material yet to be explored. Disney+ is urged to capture the complete essence of the series, incorporating the eerie animal transformations illustrated on the book covers and the more profound themes present in the books, including the war crimes perpetrated by the teens and their mental challenges.
