Samsung’s Upcoming Foldables: Slimmest and Lightest Ever

Following years of growing smartphone dimensions, the movement is shifting.

On Tuesday, Samsung disclosed in a concise, somewhat unclear blog entry on its website that the “latest Galaxy Z series” will represent the slimmest and lightest foldables the company has produced to date. That is largely the entirety of the announcement. Samsung did not specify when the foldables would be released, how many models there would be, their titles, or the exact measurements of their thinness and lightness.

Nevertheless, by employing a combination of reasoning and leaks, we can address some uncertainties. Samsung generally introduces new foldables each summer, so it is likely that we won’t have to wait long to see these devices. Unless there’s an unexpected twist, there will most likely be two foldables: the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, presuming Samsung adheres to its usual approach. If Samsung’s phrasing in the blog entry is correct, both will be slimmer and lighter than their predecessors.

Moreover, noted tech leaker @UniverseIce on X (via TechRadar) asserted in May that the Z Fold 7 will measure just 3.9mm in thickness when open and 8.9mm when closed. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 measures 5.6mm thick when open and 12.1mm when closed.

This is in line with a recent trend among smartphone manufacturers aiming to produce flagship (or nearly flagship) devices that are as slim as achievable. Samsung recently launched the Galaxy S25 Edge, a notably slender smartphone. There are also rumors that Apple is working on a model called the “iPhone 17 Air,” which would serve as an iPhone alternative to Samsung’s offering, theoretically speaking.

Let’s hope that this reduction in size does not excessively impact battery life.
