In addition to being a sci-fi enigma and psychological suspense, *Severance* is also a masterfully dark comedy. In its Season 2 finale, *Cold Harbor*, the series elevated its macabre humor to unprecedented, grisly levels.
A highlight was the shocking end of Lumon’s enforcer, Mr. Drummond (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson). He comes to work expecting to celebrate the launch of *Cold Harbor*, only to be assaulted by Mammalian Nurturable head Lorne (Gwendoline Christie), taken captive by Innie Mark (Adam Scott), and ultimately—accidentally—killed by Outie Mark, all in mere moments.
Mr. Drummond’s passing is both savage and darkly amusing. As he and Innie Mark descend in the elevator to the Testing Floor, Mark threatens him with a bolt gun typically used for goat sacrifices. Yet, when the elevator initiates Mark’s shift from Innie to Outie, he inadvertently pulls the trigger. Blood sprays from Drummond’s chest, splattering the elevator walls and leaving Outie Mark in sheer shock. This scene, reminiscent of *The Shining*’s notorious blood-filled lift, stands as one of *Severance*’s bloodiest sequences—while also being hilariously grim.
The brilliance of this moment stems from its inversion of a key *Severance* principle: the automatic switch between Innies and Outies while using Lumon’s elevator. This transition, highlighted by a signature dolly zoom and elevator ding, has been central to the series from the start. Usually, these swaps are routine, merely indicating a change in consciousness between work and personal life.
However, in *Cold Harbor*, the show twists this expectation. With Innie and Outie Mark collaborating in a high-stakes heist to save Gemma (Dichen Lachman), Mark is cycling between identities more than ever. As Innie Mark holds Drummond at gunpoint in the elevator, viewers are left pondering: What will happen when he switches? Could Drummond seize the chance to fight back?
Instead, the inevitable unfolds—Mark, oblivious to his earlier actions, accidentally discharges the bolt gun as he shifts to his Outie role. The outcome is both terrifying and darkly hilarious. In one instant, Outie Mark arrives at work; in the next, he stands drenched in blood with a corpse at his feet. Adam Scott expertly portrays both the dread and absurdity of the situation, while the sheer astonishment of Drummond’s swift, horrific end delivers an unexpectedly comedic punchline—quite literally.
This sequence exemplifies *Severance*’s unique ability to fuse horror with humor effortlessly. It also paves the way for even greater chaos in the finale, featuring another unforeseen elevator switch where Outie Mark and Gemma, amidst their reunion, abruptly transform into a bewildered Innie Mark and Ms. Casey mid-kiss. The entire scene serves as the climax of two seasons of meticulous buildup, concluding with one last, darkly humorous image: the elevator doors struggling to close on Drummond’s motionless body.
What a way to exit.
