Envision a child’s playful doodles coming to life — it feels like the start of an enchanting story. But what occurs when those doodles manifest as fearsome beasts named “Blood Eater”? That’s the captivating concept of the forthcoming film Sketch, helmed by Seth Worley.
The plot revolves around 11-year-old Amber (portrayed by Bianca Belle), a youthful artist whose vibrant imagination takes a sinister twist. Her sketchbook brims with strange, often one-eyed beings, notably the Blood Eater — a creature that, as Amber shares, “consumes blood and spews the blood back onto individuals.”
Unsurprisingly, her disturbing creations raise eyebrows among those nearby, particularly her father Taylor (Tony Hale, The Decameron), who is still mourning the passing of his wife. Despite his apprehensions, Taylor endeavors to be encouraging, telling his sister Liz (D’Arcy Carden) that Amber is “navigating some challenges.”
Things spiral into chaos when a magical mishap brings Amber’s monstrous designs into the actual world. Suddenly, Taylor finds himself on a fantastical journey with Amber, Liz, and his elder son Jack (Kue Lawrence). The film’s trailer hints at a lively realm filled with fuzzy, sparkly beings that are as peculiar as they are captivating.
Kristy Puchko, Mashable’s Entertainment Editor, lauded Sketch in her critique from the Toronto International Film Festival, calling it “a wonderfully fun and heartwarming film with a dash of weirdness that makes it a genuine delight.”
Sketch hits theaters on August 6.
