Saturday Night Live’s “Jury Duty” sketch showcases what occurs when a torrent of quirky character concepts collide in a single courtroom setting. The outcome? An uproarious jumble of potential jurors, each more odd than the previous, all attempting to evade their duty — much to the increasing annoyance of Ego Nwodim’s stoic judge.
Host Mikey Madison joins in on the merriment, portraying a series of outrageous characters alongside the remaining SNL ensemble. Among the highlights: a self-identified male feminist, a proudly bisexual juror who strangely advocates for mass incarceration, a prank-calling radio DJ who offers a dubious Jay-Z impression, and the comeback of beloved character Luigi Mangione — now being chased by a woman questioning if he got her nudes.
Madison herself takes on the role of a so-called celebrity juror, whose claim to fame is being “one of the individuals Caitlyn Jenner struck with her vehicle.” Not surprisingly, that reasoning doesn’t stand in court.
The sketch doesn’t strive for a profound message or storyline — and that’s precisely the intention. It’s nonsensical, chaotic, and evidently a joy for the cast, who bask in the ridiculousness of it all.
