SNL’s American Girl Doll Sketch Rapidly Becomes Awkward

Saturday Night Live premiered a fresh advertising sketch this week, featuring host Nikki Glaser touting life-sized American Girl Dolls. The premise is simple: as women grow older, their American Girl Dolls remain unchanged. The proposed fix is to have the same dolls, only enlarged. It’s a funny notion, apart from the twist that the male characters in the sketch have vastly different intentions for a six-foot Molly or Samantha that don’t precisely entail tea parties or historical reenactments. If the idea of what a man might do with an adult-sized American Girl Doll raises red flags, you can foresee the direction of the sketch. That’s what renders it both 1) comedic and 2) a bit disconcerting in how accurately it portrays the potential that some men would style their American Girl XL in a crop top.
