Though Sony’s latest WH-1000XM6 headphones have garnered attention, the enhancements are not substantial. “I would describe the modifications as more developmental than groundbreaking,” observes Mashable’s tech editor. The XM5s only provided a marginal improvement over the XM4s. If having the newest Sony technology isn’t a priority for you, the still-impressive XM4s can save you some money.

As of Sept. 11, Amazon is selling the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones for $198, reflecting a 43% or $152 drop from their standard price, and approaching their best-ever price. This also makes them $100 less expensive than the XM5s and $230 cheaper than the XM6s.

With only minor upgrades throughout generations, Sony has maintained the 2020 XM4 headphones’ relevance, making them an excellent budget option in 2025. They provide top-notch noise cancellation, outstanding sound quality, customizable EQ, a comfortable design, and foldable ear cups perfect for travel (unlike the XM5s). While the XM5 and XM6 headphones boast better specifications, the question of whether the slight improvements warrant an additional $100-$230 is up for debate. Priced under $200, the XM4s represent incredible value.
