Spike Lee’s reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller *High to Low* has stirred anticipation at the Cannes Film Festival this past May. Now, with the film set to hit theaters and streaming platforms, A24 and Apple have unveiled a breathtaking new trailer.
Penned by Alan Fox and Lee, *Highest 2 Lowest* stars Denzel Washington, rejoining the *Malcolm X* director, in the role of New York music mogul David King. (Kurosawa’s original story focused on Tokyo shoe executive Kingo Gondo, portrayed by Toshiro Mifune.) As a personal ransom scheme develops, the city’s famous skyline and subway system adopt a sinister atmosphere as King races to strike a deal.
Jeffrey Wright steps into the role of King’s driver, close friend, and confidant, Paul. A$AP Rocky features as Yung Felon, an up-and-coming rapper vying for the music mogul’s notice, while Ilfenesh Hadera plays David’s wife, Pam.
Lee’s crew boasts a remarkable array of talent, including longtime collaborators editor Barry Alexander Brown and composer Howard Drossin, *The Get Down* editor Allyson C. Johnson, frequent Washington producer Todd Black, and Darren Aronofsky’s favored cinematographer Matthew Libatique.
*Highest 2 Lowest* is set to debut in theaters on Aug. 15 and will become available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting Sept. 5.
