In 1984, a movie was released that would make the mockumentary style mainstream. It parodied music documentaries such as The Song Remains the Same (1976) and The Last Waltz (1978), quickly becoming a cult favorite, influencing series like The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Modern Family. This film was named This is Spinal Tap, a fictional documentary centered around a band attempting to remain intact while facing the pitfalls of musical fame in the early 1980s. One persistent dilemma they encounter: All their drummers meet absurdly mysterious ends. For years, audiences have yearned for a sequel. Eventually, 41 years later, the anticipated follow-up, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, is now here.
To promote the movie, the stars and creators — Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), and Marty DiBergi (Rob Reiner) — conducted interviews completely in character. Mashable Executive Producer Mark Stetson took this chance to spoof their spoof, crafting his own mockumentary.
This short film features “documentarian” Mark St. Etson, whose father perished like many drummers inspired by Spinal Tap — by spontaneously igniting. Mark confronts the band about their responsibility for the now-12 deceased drummers. Will Mark discover the closure he seeks from the band?
Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is currently showing in theaters.
