Have you ever fantasized about a mobile gadget specifically designed to scan your eyes? No? That’s quite reasonable — it does seem a little eerie. Nevertheless, ready or not, it has arrived.
Tools for Humanity, a startup supported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has unveiled the Orb Mini — a small, smartphone-sized device featuring two large eye sensors. This advanced tool is part of the larger World project, a bold initiative set out to create a global identity verification framework.
The Orb Mini is intended to scan your iris and associate it with a unique digital identification, all fortified through blockchain technology. The aim? To confirm that you are indeed a real person — a notion that’s gaining momentum as artificial intelligence becomes more adept at emulating human actions online.
If the Orb Mini feels like something from a sci-fi narrative, you’re not mistaken. Its design and operation are similar to the retinal scanners showcased in the dystopian film Minority Report — not exactly the most reassuring analogy, but perhaps appropriate for the technology’s ambitious goals.
So, how does it function? When utilized alongside the World app, the Orb Mini captures a high-resolution photo of your iris, creates a unique identifier, and saves it on the blockchain. This method is part of what Tools for Humanity refers to as the “World human verification project.” The company also provides a larger iteration of the device, simply called The Orb.
In addition to proving your humanity, the technology may hold other possible uses. For instance, it might be utilized to authenticate identities on dating apps. According to Wired, World is collaborating with Match Group to test a program in Japan allowing Tinder users to verify their identities using the Orb. The company is also working on a Visa-branded debit card and intends to launch ID services in six U.S. cities: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco.
To promote adoption, Tools for Humanity might provide incentives in the form of cryptocurrency. As reported by The Verge, individuals who scan their eyes with the Orb will earn 16 Worldcoin (WLD), a new digital currency directly associated with the World project.
So, if you’ve ever wanted to exchange your biometric data for cryptocurrency — or simply wish to be at the forefront of identity technology — Sam Altman’s eye-scanning gadget is prepared when you are.
