Donald Trump took advantage of several media opportunities to disparage Jimmy Kimmel prior to hosting the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday. He labeled the late-night show host and persistent critic as “awful,” remarking, “If I can’t surpass Jimmy Kimmel in terms of ability, then I don’t believe I should be president.”

Stephen Colbert’s reply? “You can’t and you really shouldn’t.”

In a segment from The Late Show, Colbert conveys his bewilderment regarding Trump’s fixation on Kimmel, pointing out that Kimmel has never actually been the host of the event.

“I reached out to him, and Jimmy Kimmel has not hosted the Kennedy Center Honors,” Colbert states. “But here’s the reality: I did, for the three years before Trump took office.”
