Stephen Colbert Condemns Trump’s Outburst at the White House

“Two terms in, and being nine months into this, one might assume it would be impossible to still be astonished by Donald Trump,” Stephen Colbert commenced his Late Show monologue on Tuesday. “But credit where it’s due, occasionally he takes a moment to connect the electrodes to our nipples, and it feels like the initial experience.”

Naturally, the late night host is referring to the president “going Hulk Smash on the White House.” The tearing down of sections of the White House’s East Wing, constructed in 1902 and expanded upon in 1942, commenced this week as part of the development of Trump’s $250 million new ballroom. On Monday, construction workers dismantled some of the East Wing’s windows and an entrance.

“In line with his White House ballroom endeavor, he deployed a backhoe to tear down a segment of the East Wing,” remarked Colbert, displaying a photo of the demolition. “That is profoundly unsettling. It’s akin to being a child and spotting your teacher at the grocery store. For sale. In the meat section.”

As Colbert highlighted, the dismantling of parts of the East Wing is proceeding despite Trump’s assurance in July that his new ballroom “won’t affect the existing building…It’ll be adjacent but not in contact.”

“So that was a falsehood,” Colbert stated. “At this point, should we even trust that this will ultimately turn out to be a ballroom? It could just as easily transform into a combined Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.”

Colbert further mentioned that the Treasury Department, located facing the White House, has instructed employees not to post photos of the demolition — “not typically something you advise when you’re proud of what’s happening.”
