Enthusiasts of *Stranger Things* are alleging that the Duffer Brothers utilized generative AI to compose the show’s fifth and concluding season. This theory emerged after viewers believed they spotted the AI chatbot ChatGPT opened on the creators’ laptops during the behind-the-scenes documentary *One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5*.
The *Stranger Things* finale wrapped up the beloved retro sci-fi series last month, yet numerous viewers felt unfulfilled, indicating on social platforms that the conclusion seemed anticlimactic and lacking in reward.
Certain fans thought they uncovered a reason for their discontent when *One Last Adventure* debuted on Netflix. The documentary, which delves into the creation of the final season, featured footage of the Duffer Brothers crafting scripts, including clips of their laptop screens showing various browser tabs. While most tabs appeared harmless, one particular shot displayed several indistinct tabs with circular monochrome icons, prompting fans to hypothesize that they might be ChatGPT icons.
The notion gained momentum when the documentary disclosed that the fifth season wasn’t entirely written as production commenced. Though this isn’t conclusive evidence, fans interpreted it as a possible indication that generative AI was employed to expedite scriptwriting.
In response to the conjecture, *One Last Adventure*’s director Martina Radwan expressed skepticism regarding the blurry tabs being ChatGPT and asserted that she hadn’t observed the writers using generative AI unethically. Nevertheless, she added that it shouldn’t be an issue if the Duffer Brothers opted to utilize ChatGPT, as it’s permissible for creators to leverage generative AI as a resource.
Despite Radwan’s remarks, not everyone is in agreement. Fans recognize that there’s no definitive proof that ChatGPT was employed for writing scripts, and the Duffer Brothers might have been using the AI for alternative reasons. Nonetheless, many protest the use of generative AI for research, outlining, brainstorming, or script planning. The potential of having ChatGPT open in the same browser used for scripting *Stranger Things* has left viewers feeling wary.
